  Food , Communication, Celebration Good food is frequently used to celebrate a special occasion. Below are examples. Above there is fine dining for a special occasion. Alcoholic beverages like wines may well be consumed. In countries such as France, Spain, Italy and Portugal, wine is frequently served with meals. Above, gift baskets with fruits and flowers have been prepared for a Christmas celebration. A Birthday cake made for unity and fun. Thanksgiving and Christmas are occasions that are celebrated with lots of special foods and preparation. Please try my Banana Bread recipe. This recipe yields 2 loaves. You may try using half the ingredients, for 1 loaf. Don't forget to grease the pan prior to putting in the mix. It is delicious!

Can you identify the six food items in this picture?  Have a fun time searching! Overeating can be costly!   I enjoy cooking for myself and others. Cooking and  good eating is wonderful. However, there is another side to eating and trying out recipes. Not all recipes are healthy. Sometimes eating the wrong foods, can do more harm than good. It also helps  to exercise  on a regular basis. The heart is always at work. Taking care of your heart, is of paramount importance. Eating healthy meals, resting enough and avoiding bad habits, really helps.  Be heart smart, avoid eating rich foods before bedtime! GARLIC A NATURAL WONDER

 Garlic is a bulb with a very distinct odor and is commonly used in cooking. It originates in Asia, but also grows in California. Garlic is known to have wonderful medicinal value. Garlic has a very pungent smell, which may  make it undesirable. It is worth overlooking its smell for its great value. Garlic is used by many, to combat conditions  such as  food poisoning. It is also known to decrease cholesterol and blood pressure. Garlic contains vitamin C, potassium , calcium and more.

  Food flavors from bland to spicy Flavoring food can make it really special. Herbs and spices are widely used around the globe . They are used as a way to enhance the taste of food, as a preservative or for  medicinal  purposes.  Spices such as saffron, which is derived  from the flower of the Crocus sativus, adds aroma and color to foods such as rice. F ennel, chili, whole or black pepper may be used in salamis, cheeses and  sausages. We can go on and on, about spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, cloves and more. Soy flavor is commonly used in Asian cooking. It is prepared from soybeans and includes a combination  of flavors. Salty, fermented , slightly bitter and mildly sweet. Fish, meats and vegetables are flavored with soy sauces of different types. Curry powder which involves a variety of spices such  as coriander, turmeric, ginger, garlic, chili, fenugreek and cloves. Hi guys, Welcome to all a new year, 2026. We continue to " navigate our way" through All Things Food. Today, our main focus is food hygiene. Infection may be spread in many ways. Colds and flu's  may result from a weakened immune system. Salad bars, restaurants ,  coffee shops, public transportation and more, are some of the ways in which viruses can spread. Ensuring good hygiene.   Good hygiene   keeps the bugs away. Gloves should not be used as a pair of hands. Changing gloves and hand washing , helps to prevent the spread of infection. Believe it or not!

PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF INFECTION

  Many people travel to  different places . Some flights are long, some are short. Infection can easily spread from one place to another. Using such areas like  wash rooms , going through checkpoints, picking up baggage and endless sharing of  communal areas,  may all make a contribution to spreading infection. Good  hygiene  keeps the bugs away. Helpful hint: Gloves should not be used as a pair of hands. Changing gloves  and hand washing helps to  prevent the spread of infection.

Berries, fruits and vegetables Berries, fruits and vegetables are frequently served at the table in various ways. Let's start with berries. They may be served in pancakes, pies, cakes mixed in yogurt, beverages, cereals, muffins, preserves, wine, teas and more. Berries are rich in vitamins , potassium  and magnesium. They are also said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Berries include blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes, cranberries, blackberries,  boysenberries and many more. Where do berries grow? Berries generally grow on bushes. Strawberries however, grow on low lying plants, not bushes, along the ground. Grapes grow in clusters on vines. They are well known for making wine.  Berries are very versatile. They grow all around the world and are not limited to temperature. Some grow in desert climate while others in Arctic or tropical climate.                             ...

Let's address food indulgence. We all love good food. It is wonderful to enjoy  good food, but it can also be costly. Diabetes, obesity and allergies are all included. Lack of exercise and indulgent eating, may have further consequences. It is suggested  that exercise helps to promote good brain function. Scenario:  Above is Mr.R who works in a fast food joint.  He loves to drink sodas. He is now beginning to experience the early symptoms of diabetes. He will learn from his doctor,  he has diabetes. Exercise helps prevent diabetes  and lowers blood glucose. Exercise helps to maintain good circulation and prevent  heart  disease. It also tends to lower blood pressure . The heart is always at work , whether you are at work or asleep.   It starts in the ocean and ends up on the table. Yes, seafood makes its way to the table in many  different forms.It is a favorite of many and eaten more frequently than steak. Seafood is known to be a rich source of vitamins,  minerals, omega-3 fatty acids and iodine. Lobster, an expensive type of seafood , is usually served boiled. They thrive at the bottom of the ocean and are known to live for a very long time. Countries like Japan, are well known for their love of seafood.  Katsuobushi - this Japanese tuna dish, is made of dried,  fermented skipjack tuna. Smoked herring is a favorite of countries like Scandinavia,  the Caribbean and the Netherlands. Bacalao, dried cod fish, a favorite in Spain and Italy.   Fish and chips is a British favorite.   Food origins As we continue to explore food origins, we know  that wheat is a staple of many countries . In some countries, bread is served with every meal. Cereals, beans, dairy products, grains and bananas  are included in the staple foods family. Wheat grows in the fields and winds up on the table as cakes, breads, muffins and cookies. Wheat is grown in India, the USA, China, Russia and more.                                            This recipe yields 2 loaves.   Food origins Let us take a  closer look at food origins. There are many foods such as rice, potatoes, corn and wheat (in the form of breads, cakes, pies), which are used as staple foods in different countries.  These foods are generally economical and readily  available. There are other staples which will be discussed later. Rice is a staple food of many countries. It can be served hot or cold. Most rice is grown in Asia, in countries like China and India. Rice grows in swamp land and will wind up on the table   of many, as a main meal. There are some wonderfully  flavored rice like Jasmine or Basmati.   Potatoes are a  known staple in many countries like England and Ireland. We will begin to explore every aspect of food, from cooking, eating, celebration, culture, allergies, hygiene , fast food, origin of foods, energy foods to be used on the run and more. Let us start at the very beginning. Why do we eat? Food is a great source of nourishment. We eat for health, taste, as a way to communicate and to celebrate special occasions.   Food is as much a necessity as the air we breathe. Food  choices may be cultural or medically ordered. We will  discuss these in greater detail later. People travel all around the globe. Some travel for pleasure, work, health reasons and more. Regardless of the reason for travel, food is a necessity. COMMONLY USED FOODS AND THEIR PROPERTIES

  The smell of coffee  is close by. A passerby can hardly resist the smell. Where does coffee come from? Coffee is grown in  countries  like Ethiopia,  Colombia , Brazil and Peru. It is an interesting fact that coffee originated in Ethiopia, in an area known as Kaffa.The Coffea plant produces a seed which has a pip. This pip is used for coffee.  Sugar is a commonly used sweetener. It adds flavor to our food and can produce energy as well. It makes  its way to the table in many forms.  It is used in cereals , breads, pastries, tea, coffee, desserts   like ice cream, pies , tea,  coffee  and more. Sugar starts off in the field, in the form of a sugar cane plant. It is a wonderful and nutritionally sound food.  It is rich in vitamins and minerals.The sugar cane plant grows in tropical countries like the Caribbean islands, Philippines, Brazil, Mexico, India and more.
