COMMONLY USED FOODS AND THEIR PROPERTIES

 

The smell of coffee  is close by. A passerby can hardly
resist the smell. Where does coffee come from? Coffee
is grown in countries like Ethiopia, Colombia, Brazil
and Peru.

It is an interesting fact that coffee originated in Ethiopia,
in an area known as Kaffa.The Coffea plant produces a
seed which has a pip. This pip is used for coffee. 

Sugar is a commonly used sweetener. It adds flavor
to our food and can produce energy as well. It makes 
its way to the table in many forms.

 It is used in cereals , breads, pastries, tea, coffee, desserts 
 like ice cream, pies , tea, coffee and more.

Sugar starts off in the field, in the form of a sugar cane plant.
It is a wonderful and nutritionally sound food.  It is rich in
vitamins and minerals.The sugar cane plant grows in tropical
countries like the Caribbean islands, Philippines, Brazil, Mexico,
India and more.


Salt as we know it, is a very simple commodity. It is not
only essential to the body's survival, but also used in a
number of ways that we hardly recognize.

The body depends on salt. It is an electrolyte found in all the
body's cells. Sweat contains salt. Salt is used in sports drinks
to combat dehydration. 


Salt may be extracted from the rocks in the sea (rock salt).
It may also come from seaweed.

Salt is very versatile. It can be seen on the tables of the
finest restaurants, at home on the dinner table or handed
out in small packages in fast food restaurants.


Salt is used in the preservation of meats like sausages and
salami. It is also used in gravies, canned goods, cheeses,
pickles, olives, anchovies and many more. Salt adds flavor
to food!
